Originally from French-speaking Switzerland, with a wine-growing background reduced to the simplest expression, the Bavaud family decided to take over a farm to produce quality grapes to reveal exceptional wines. Xavier, Martine and Valentin arrived on August 27, 2020 on the farm. The vines had already been converted to organic crops. Their objectives are multiple but the main idea is to produce wines on the property by becoming the winegrowers of the smallest certified organic farm! Founding members of OWSA (Organic Wines of South Africa) since 2024 to promote sustainable practices.
wine is forEveryone
We believe that wine is something everyone can appreciate. It makes life a little sweeter! “When the wine is drawn, it must be drunk, especially if it is good” (Marcel Pagnol) and “There is more philosophy in a bottle of wine than in all the books.” (Louis Pasteur).
No pretension here but passion and listening to nature… Good things are the simplest, but simplicity is full of complexity! Sharing our wines is an invitation to relax and escape…

Although Lazanou Organic Vineyards has just over 5 hectares under vineyard it boasts a variety of cultivars carefully chosen for their suitability to the microclimatic conditions and soils of the farm. Cultivars include Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah (Shiraz) and Mourvedre.
Chenin Blanc originates from the Loire Valley in France and is ideally suited to the warmer climatic conditions of Wellington. Lazanou has two vineyards under Chenin Blanc. The oldest vineyard planted in 1987. The other vineyard is mainely used for our Chenin Blanc/ Chardonnay/ Viognier blend.
Chardonnay originates from north-eastern France, notably Burgundy and Champagne. It is a popular cultivar internationally. Lazanou has two Chardonnay vineyards. One is used for our premier single vineyard Chardonnay and the other mainely for our Chenin Blanc / Chardonnay/ Viognier blend. We also take the opportunity to make early harvest to produce our MCC.
Viognier originates from the northern Rhone region in France. It is an increasingly fashionable cultivar internationally, particularly in blends with Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay or Syrah. Lazanou has two Viognier vineyards grapes from which are used in our Chenin Blanc / Chardonnay/ Viognier blend.
Syrah, better known as Shiraz in South Africa and Australia, also originates from the northern Rhone region in France and is increasing in popularity internationally. Lazanou had two Syrah vineyards but we currently only have one. We have uprooted and put in fallow one vineyard to plant in the next two years new vines.
Mourvedre, internationally known by its French name, is of Spanish origin (monastrell). This cultivar is increasingly successful in serious southern French blends. Grapes from this vineyard are used to produce a northern Rhone style Syrah/ Mourvedre blend.
